The Thatches is one of a number of houses built in the early years of the
last century in this part of Thurlestone, modest "rural"thatched
houses with large gardens, a sort of pleasing garden suburb. The Thatches
itself is in shabby condition but basicaly sound. It has a number of unattractive
flat roofed additions but would require little attention to turn it again
into a very attractive house and garden.
The two detached houses proposed in this application are large industrialised
buildings which occupy, together with their drives and hardstanding, the large
part of the site. They contain all the paraphenalia considered necessary by
marketing for modern consumerism including "meet and greet foyers",
games rooms and ensuite bedrooms. There could not be a more marked contrast
between the proposal and the existing house and its surroundings.
The South Hams Society therefore reccommends that the application be refused
on the basis that it does not respect the character of its surroundings, it
is overdevelopment of the site and the existing house requires little attention
to make it habitable.
