in Current Consultations.
At the last meeting of the Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary Conservation Forum concern was expressed about the future financial viability of the Harbour operation. Nigel Mortimer, Marine Conservation Officer has kindly informed the Society about the draft business plan for Salcombe Harbour Authority which has now been prepared and is available for consultation.
Nigel informs us that the five year plan is based upon the Harbour Board’s core principles of safety, stakeholder involvement, value for money, environmental stewardship, a catalyst for sustainable economic development and support to local employment. It is geared towards achieving the following strategic objectives:· The provision of a first class service to residents and visitors· Environmental Stewardship· Long term security of tenure· Development of Salcombe’s harbour infrastructure· Development of Kingsbridge’s harbour infrastructure
To take part in the consultation or for more information on the Strategic Business Plan please visit http://www.consultationfinder.com/devon/southhams/
Having looked at the plan I would suggest it is far too inward looking. It does not consider how the Harbour Authority will work in tandem with other businesses and with organisations promoting and protecting the high quality natural environment upon which tourism and the wider economy depends.
Would all readers having an interest in the estuary take a look by clicking on the link provided above and make comments on this weblog so as to inform the Society’s response.

Robert Waterhouse will be leading a walk on Sunday 1st April around East Prawle and Prawle Point tracing the history and development of the Village and looking at the Bronze Age field systems near the coast. Meet at 10.30 on the village green £3, bring your own lunch. Arranged by the Coast & Countryside Events team, further details in the South Devon AONB Spring Events leaflet, available from TIC’s. I have been on several of Robert’s walks, it usually helps to be energetic but this one probably gentle going. I will certainly attend.
